Social Services

Libraries are locations where community members from all walks of life come to find information and get connected to services. For connections to social services, Burbank Public Library supports these needs through a social worker and a resource space, the LINK.

Social Worker

While traditional Library staff are well-trained in research skills to provide that information, many libraries across the country have realized that the addition of a trained social services professional to the staff provides opportunities to enhance the essential work of connecting people to help.

Burbank Public Library's social worker joined the staff in July 2021. Sona Ter-Yegishyan is co-located at Burbank's three libraries and two senior centers, in a position jointly funded by the Library and the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department of the City of Burbank. With a master's degree in social work, Sona brings an important level of expertise to these settings, allowing for improved services to those in need.

What does Sona do? Most of her time is spent in the libraries and senior centers, building rapport with those who use the facilities to make them more comfortable requesting services. She is available to meet one-on-one with individuals of all ages and families in order to understand their needs and connect them to services. To this end, she also works to expand the Library's partnerships with local and regional nonprofits and government agencies who provide services including shelter, food, mental and physical health care, financial and legal assistance, transportation and more. Services are available to people experiencing homelessness but also anyone who needs assistance.

To make an appointment with Sona, please call 818-238-5571 or email socialservices@burbankca.gov

The LINK

The LINKs at the Central Library and Buena Vista Library opened in March 2024. These rooms provide a comfortable and supportive environment for community members to access services through the Library social worker and other community partners. Via the LINK, agencies such as Home Again LA and LA Family Housing will be able to offer onsite, in-person appointments and drop-in services for community members. All client scheduling is done by partner agencies.

At the Central Library, the LINK is located on the first floor. Enter the main library through the doors to the left of the checkout desk and continue left past the teen books. At the Buena Vista Library, the LINK is located across from the checkout desk.

If you are a social services agency interested in reserving the LINK, email socialservices@burbankca.gov to get started.

The LINKs may not be reserved by members of the general public. Click here for more information on spaces for the general public: study rooms and meeting rooms.
