Burbank Reads is a program inspired by the idea that the shared act of reading can bring the community together. Everyone in the community is encouraged to read the same book and participate in discussion and learning surrounding the subject matter.
The theme for Burbank Reads 2022 is community and belonging. Through the act of reading and discussing one book related to the theme, we will explore, promote and foster social connectedness, civic engagement (participation), and empathy for our neighbors.

OUR SELECTED BOOKS
The main title for 2022 is A Map Is Only One Story: Twenty Writers on Immigration, Family, and the Meaning of Home edited by Nicole Chung. Selected from the archives of Catapult magazine, the essays highlight the human side of immigration policies and polarized rhetoric, as twenty writers share provocative personal stories of existing between languages and cultures.
Through the power of personal narratives, as told by both emerging and established writers, A Map Is Only One Story offers a new definition of home in the twenty-first century.
To encourage participation at all age levels, our librarians selected a book for children to read and discuss together with their family and friends. Our World is a Family: Our Community Can Change the World by Miry Whitehill (Author), Jennifer Jackson (Author), Nomar Perez (Illustrator), is a picture book exploring the complicated topic of human migration in a gentle, loving, and affirming way. It lightly touches on the reason people might leave their homes, like climate change or lack of safety, and inspires children to welcome their new neighbors into their communities with love.
